Bikeology at the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest
I recently visited the Museum of Applied Arts of Budapest. Here I want to share with you some artistic approaches I found particularly interesting.
Bikeology is an exhibition which centers around the role of design in urban cycling.
Velocipedia, by Gianluca Gimini
The first project that particularly appealed to me is called Velocipedia. The designer Gianluca Gimini started by asking random people to draw a bicycle by heart. Most of them turned out slightly off, parts were missing and the overall design would make them impossible to ride. But somehow, that makes them even more charming. He then went on to recreate these bicycles and render them as if they were real.
I really like how he took simple drawings and extended the concept to make them look real. You can read more about his project on his website.
The results are really diverse and remind me of how different bicycles used to look.
Bike to Life, by Toormix
The second project is called Bike to Life. The idea of the design studio Toormix was to collect photographs of abandoned bicycles and to use them as inspiration for an alphabet.
I like how they give the abandoned bicycles a second life though design.
You can read more about their project on their website.
You can check out the rest of the exhibits here.
Let me know in the comments if you know of any other similar design approach, giving a new life to an object or drawing. Also let me know if you found this article inspiring, and I will try to share my artistic discoveries with you more often!
